Thierry Mugler: The Fragrances That Changed the Rules

Thierry Mugler: The Fragrances That Changed the Rules

Few names in fragrance are as distinctive as Thierry Mugler.

Born Manfred Thierry Mugler, he was much more than a fashion designer. He was an artist, photographer, director and visionary who wasn't afraid to be dramatic or different. He created the House of Mugler in 1974, bringing his love of exaggerated silhouettes, fantasy and the extraordinary into fashion and, eventually, fragrance.

His biggest fragrance breakthrough came in 1992 with Angel. It was unlike anything that had come before it, combining sweet gourmand notes such as praline and caramel with patchouli and helping to establish the gourmand fragrance category.

At The Perfume Company, we have several fragrances inspired by Mugler's distinctive creations.

A*Men

A#215 – inspired by A*Men by Thierry Mugler is the masculine counterpart to Angel. It's rich, warm and distinctive, with coffee, caramel, vanilla, patchouli and amber giving it a bold character. It was created for the man who likes his fragrance to have plenty of personality.

Womanity

W#338 – inspired by Womanity by Thierry Mugler is perhaps one of his most unusual creations. Fig, fig leaf, fig wood and an unusual caviar accord create a fragrance that is quite unlike the typical feminine perfume.

Alien Goddess Intense

A#10 – inspired by Alien Goddess Intense by Thierry Mugler is a much warmer and more sensual interpretation, built around coconut, jasmine, vanilla, benzoin and cashmere wood. It's part of the Alien family and reflects Mugler's fascination with powerful, almost otherworldly femininity.

What makes Mugler's fragrances so memorable is that they were never really designed to simply smell "pretty". They were designed to make an impression.

From the iconic star of Angel to the unusual compositions of Womanity and Alien, Mugler brought the same imagination and sense of theatre to perfume that he brought to fashion.
